About Natalie Cheah

If you think television impacted your life in one way or another, Natalie Cheah probably got hit harder by the influence bug. When Project Runway started screening, it piqued Natalie's interest in wanting to be involved in fashion design. She didn’t want to have a ‘normal’ job like being a doctor or lawyer because she could not picture herself at the desk doing the same thing everyday.

Natalie kept her life ambition a secret for a while, until she realized that the fashion world, above all else, was what kept Natalie's interests at its peak, and made her the happiest.

To her, the fashion world always offered something new, something interesting and something different each season. Being one to to love change, the fast moving, ever evolving world of fashion seemed to fit perfectly.

About Natalie's Graduate Collection

Baroque Architecture was the inspiration for the collection. The Baroque period was a period of excess and exuberance, giving lots of elements that could be extracted to play around with. Taking a contemporary approach, the silhouette is inspired by the dome shaped roofs while playing with volume on the body.

The ornate interiors are translated as textures such as embroidery and laced detailing. The colours are mainly neutral hues with a dash of colour and a play on tones and contrast. It is a collection for the bold, feminine and out-going women. The woman who dresses in this collection is characterized as bold, feminine and out-going, unafraid of being different, and with an eye for beauty, detail and design.

Elvin Ooi (Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts)

About Elvin Ooi

"Fashion has always been my passion. I can say I’m born to be in this industry."

Since young, what Elvin wanted most for Christmas would always been those beautiful Barbie Dolls, all inclusive of frocks, small cut out jeans and accessories so he could dress them up, do up their hair, and reconstruct their image- all day long.

Being an adventurous soul, and knowing that fashion would be his one and only undying interest, Elvin chose to study fashion in pursuit of his passion and dreams.

"I love what I’m doing now in school and I need publicity to show my passion to the industry. I aspire to be the next Raf Simons or Maison Martin Margiela."

About Elvin's Graduate Collection

Elvin's minimalistic collection for Menswear Spring/Summer 2010 is titled ‘Turing Point’. 'Turning Point' was inspired by the building ‘Turning Torso’ created by ‘Santiago Calatrava’, for its twisted architecture, the manifold windows, and the ‘pass through’ chords that surround the building exterior.

The slim and body-hugging collection is meant to create a "3-dimensional image" albeit on a flat piece of cloth base. Elvin creates this effect by utilizing varying tones of the same colour and coupling this with seems that are uniquely cut at different angles. ‘Twisting’ of the Turning Torso is adapted to fashion details like the collars, waistbands and hemlines of pants.

Jennifer Choi (Parsons The New School For Design)

About Jennifer Choi

Jennifer always loved the thought of becoming a fashion designer. When shopping, she would always consider how the clothes complement items already in her wardrobe. But this alone did not keep her content, Jennifer thought up creations in her head that she would love to wear, but sadly, did not exist. Thus, to satisfy her desire, and out of pure interest, Jennifer took up dressmaking and began to appreciate the sophistication of constructing clothes, the measurements and fit, the aesthetic relationship calling for balance or extravagance between proportions and silhouettes.

In Jennifer's perspective,

"There’s just something so addictive and gratifying about selecting the fabric and shaping it into an exclusive, wearable piece. Fashion may depict culture, a way of thinking - a lifestyle, through ideal or totally fantastical concepts, which provides a form of romantic escape for me to dream big."

About The Collection

The ‘Gossumer’ collection speaks of light and lightness. The aesthetic is brought to life by infusing a gossamer quality into clothes that would be accentuated when worn in the light-filled season of summer. Our chief inspiration comes from the music of the Fleet Foxes, whose cover art and baroque style songs of folk imagery transform the collection into something that is at once romantic, feminine and ethereal.

Based on the setting of the garden tea party in Alice in Wonderland, the collection alludes to fairytales and pays homage to the soft and sublime beauty of summer. The selection of delicate fabrics and classic colours lends femininity and froth to the outfits, adding a sense of subdued elegance.

Anindya Kirana Mantik

About "Indy" Mantik

Indy was inspired to study fashion because she found herself constantly surrounded by art since young. As a native Balinese, tradition and culture brought out many interesting aspects of art in architecture, paintings, and general design. Her parents, Indy says, were also a fashion-conscious duo who moulded Indy into the experimental girl who hungered for good style and new looks.

Such an environment led to her realization of wanting to pursue a career in the fashion industry. Her passion and love lies in anything related to fashion and she is confident that she will excel in this career line.

About Indy's Graduate Collection

Titled “Kite Fight!”, Indy's graduate collection is inspired by the Indian fighting kites. Kite flying is a tradition in India where kites deck the skies almost everyday, boasting their bright colours and beautiful designs.

Aimed at capturing these striking colours and transforming them into a "funky street look", Indy's outfits take on both the shape and colour combinations of Indian kites. The silhouettes are mostly oblong or natural and there are also lots of unexpected use of colours and details as well.

Design to Jia Wen, is a form of creative expression that holds no boundaries, no formatting and has no true definition. Through her learning journey in Fashion Design, Jia Wen wishes to explore and venture into garments that are highly experimental, refined in detailing, and immaculately constructed. She believes the world is taking shape such that the space to break free from boundaries in fashion are suppressed due to the importance of commercial value and the business aspect of the industry. With a creative mind and amazing eye for detail, Jia Wen believes this:

“An undefined beauty, not conformed to boundaries”

Ugly. Beautiful is a series of story-telling apparels that is experimental, highly emphasizing on drapes with unusual fabrications and textures in new cuttings and silhouettes. It is a collection first inspired by collapsing houses and its textures; matters that rust, mould or have decayed- basically anything that changes in shape, form, color and texture with time.

Ugly. Beautiful is all about an unconventional form of beauty that is inspired by the raw, rugged and unpolished matters that are present in our everyday surroundings in which we often tend to overlook.

Erika Szczepkowski Shralai (Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts)

About Erika "S".

With a mix heritage and colourful ethnic background, the pan Asian Erika found herself being spurred into designing clothes that express her experiences. Living most of her life in Thailand, Erika came to Singapore to pursue her education and career in fashion. Armed with the skills and knowledge she has gained throughout her school stint, Erika wishes to infuse her knowledge of the various Asian cultures into her designs and spread the appreciation of these cultures.

"I believe that culture and your own sense of identity is very important in the design industry and because of my diverse roots and related experience I believe I am one of a kind."

Living predominantly in Thailand, Erika was inspired by the rich culture of the country, in particular, the practice and teachings of Buddhism. With its emphasis on harmony and inner peace, Erika believed that Buddhism, expressed as an abstract art using earth tones palette and bright essence colours would bring out the beauty of being an Asian Buddhist.

Erika carefully infuses modernity into tradition by coupling modern fabrics and tailoring with the traditional design of the wraps, simplicity in cloth wearing, light fabrics, layering and loose silhouettes derived from the monk robes. Also inspired by the patching of the Gold Leaf, Erika's collection commonly contrasts different fabrics to add texture and interest.

About Daisy's Graduate Collection

Titled "Stage Beauty", Daisy's graduation collection is inspired by the Swan Lake ballet. After reading the heart rending story of the ballet Daisy found herself attracted to the beautiful movement of ballerinas, as well as the grace that surrounded them.

Her collection is created to represent the melancholic mood and sentimental love story of the ballet, hence the play of pastel nude to brownish hues. Coupled with silk and chiffon fabrics, Daisy's collection emphasizes luxury and grace.
